Spanish

Modern Foreign Language

According to the New Curriculum introduced in September 2014, a Modern Foreign Language (MFL) must be taught at KS2. At Sunnyfields, we teach Spanish because it is one of the most widely spoken languages around the world.  Approximately 350 million people speak Spanish as a native language and 70 million as a second language.  It is the third most spoken language worldwide after Mandarin and Hindi. We believe the teaching of Spanish is a powerful way of preparing the children for the modern world.

Whilst MFL is not compulsory at KS1, we do giver younger children the opportunity to learn Spanish at Sunnyfields as we see it as an excellent opportunity for the children, many of whom are bilingual, to build on and develop pride in their linguistic skills.

We are very fortunate at Sunnyfields as Spanish is taught by a native speaker who promotes the learning of the language through a range of different topics and weekly activities. In order to encourage children to want to learn a MFL, the activities ensure that the classroom experience is fun and interactive.

The school has developed links with a small school in Torremolinos, Málaga Spain to provide children in years 6 and 4 with the opportunity to practise the language, exchange experiences and get to know the culture.

In March 2016, we celebrated the “International Mother Tongue Day” focusing on the main languages spoken in our school community.  Parents and volunteers contributed by organising a range of activities such as a celebratory assembly, puppet show, cooking workshops and storytelling in a variety of home languages. The children loved dressing in their national costumes or the colours of their national flag for the event.

Here is the Curriculum Map for Spanish.
