The New Special Needs Code of Practice

On 1st September 2014, the Children and Families Act 2014 introduced a new framework for children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) representing the biggest shift in SEN for 30 years. All Local Authorities are required to publish information on 'the Local Offer' about all SEND services, along with details of any eligibility for specialist services and a signpost to support for those who do not meet thresholds.

Sunnyfields School aims to make every effort to secure provision for any child with Special Educational Needs or Disabilities and to improve their outcomes through high aspirations and expectations for children and young people with SEN and/or disabilities.

All Barnet Local Authority (LA) schools are expected to identify and support pupils with special educational needs and to support them in making the best possible progress. Schools are required to be inclusive, with the needs of pupils with special educational needs and disabilities being met in a mainstream setting wherever possible.

Schools have a duty to publish SEN information on their website that is reviewed annually. The Local Authority is also expected to publish information about services they expect to be available for the children and young people with SEN aged 0-25. This is called the 'Local Offer'. The intention of the Local Offer is to improve choice and information being given to families. It will be an important resource for parents and carers in understanding the range of services and provision in their local area.

Click here for 'Disability Equality Scheme and Access Plan 2018-2021' which gives information about how the school is tackling disability dicrimination by introducing policies and procedures that actively promote opportunities for disabled stakeholders (parents, children, staff). Long and short term plans to make the school more accessible for disabled children. It also includes a section on the range of SEND provided for currently in our school and how adaptions are made to the curriculum and learning environment.
